Establishing modern Golf Greens:
Currently NONE of the seeded Bermudas, even the highly
improved varieties such as Princess 77, Rivera and Yukon are
considered to be a Green Quality grass. They are all
IMPROVED FAIRWAY QUALITY grasses and should be only planted on
Tees, Fairways and other NON-Green areas.
GREENS:
Use of Princess 77 or Yukon Bermuda Seed
Princess 77 and Yukon are
NOT recommended
for use on golf course greens.
Why Not seeded varieties?
Both Yukon & Princess 77 are FAIRWAY quality
grasses… when used on greens (mowed 3/8 and below) these grasses
do NOT produce a smooth putting surface. The ball travel tends to
bounce or be off “true” going to right or left in travel. –
For best putting greens you need to use an improved “green
quality” grass such as Tifdwarf. All green quality grasses can
only be plugged, sprigged, or sodded (no seeds).
Use
of Princess 77 or Yukon:
Will work only where the individual understands
it will provide a much “less than normal” putting surface.
– An average green size is 5000 sq. ft. on most golf courses.
Note that NONE of the
seeded varieties are considered green
quality at this time. Bermuda Tif-419 is also NOT a good
choice for greens, as it also is considered by turf managers to be
a fairway quality grass. All modern greens are generally mowed
daily to provide a uniform grass surface. Occasionally the course
may skip one day of mowing (such as on Monday), but it is still
mowed 6 days a week. Other management practices such as
fertilization and insect / disease control are based on local
needs and usage.

FAIRWAYS:
We sell several products that are considered
Fairway quality greens. Fairways are generally maintained at ˝
inch.
The Seeded
fairway varieties are:
- Princess 77 (Top of line / best quality –
Fine leaves)
- Triangle Blend - (Second best choice… not
quite as fine a leaves / more economical) – Blend of 3 fairway
quality varieties.
- Mohawk - (Best where salinity may be an
issue).
- Sydney, Sultan & Panama. - (Occasionally
used alone).
- Yukon
- La Prima Blend
All of these can be found available for sale at
Bermudagrass.com
If you want the finest textured fairways
in a seeded Bermuda grass – the Princess 77 or Yukon is the
preferred choice. On areas where mowing will be above 1” there is
not much noticeable difference between Princess and other
varieties.
Triangle Blend makes a good choice
where cost of establishment is more important than a fine bladed
Bermuda. It will look similar in color to others (Princess 77)
but is slightly wider and less dense. As mowing levels move below
˝ inch, Princess tends to look better than the other varieties.
BERMUDA -- ESTABLISHMENT BY SEED:
The average establishment time is 45-60 days
depending on normal conditions and correct management procedures
with application of 1# N / week.
Coated Bermuda
Seed / Irrigated establishment:
Plant 1-2 lbs per 1000 sq. ft. (with correct management)
Acre: 43 to 86 lbs./ acre.
Most varieties are packaged in 25# containers.
